Get out of your comfort zone
Growth only happens when things get tough sometimes. As Henry Ford once said, "If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got." If something always comes easily to us, then we are unlikely to learn anything through it. And think back to how you felt the last time you stepped out of your comfort zone and did something great as a result - self-esteem is the reward for overcoming challenges. And who doesn't want that great feeling?
Simple makes dissatisfied
People tend to take the easy way out. Whether professionally or personally, they do things that are easy. No doubt they may be diligent and orderly in doing so, but not effective. Staying in the comfort zone is easy - which is exactly why so many are staying there. It's comfortable, you don't have to face headwinds, and you know exactly what to expect. Small successes give you a little dopamine kick to feel better but the important things to grow your business, advance your career, have better relationships or get physically fit fall by the wayside. There is a lack of focus, perseverance and patience and escaping into temporary small "wins" is enough for many. This may be convenient, but real growth or visible change cannot be achieved this way. In the long run, staying in one and the same place makes you dissatisfied.
Learning success and creativity boost
If you want maximum learning success, you have to make sure you spend 70% of your time doing difficult things. Only in this way personal growth is possible, which requires positive change. Stepping out of your comfort zone also stimulates creativity to learn about new possibilities and break old routines. A study published in Applied Cognitive Psychology (2012) showed that students who spent a semester away from home scored higher on two creativity tests than those students who stayed in their home country.
"If I could, I would..."
"If I could live my life over again, I would..." You may have heard a statement like this, but in retrospect, people tend to regret the things they didn't do. Greatness is only possible outside the comfort zone. If all people had only stayed within this zone, there would probably still be no cars, no Internet and no cell phones today.
